I was recently watching a show featuring an interior design studio based in Vancouver, Canada. The principal designer and her team were meeting with a client who was soon to open a new cafe which was to have an Australian theme. I was really enjoying the show but now my attention was really piqued!
I had so many questions: How would they translate our Aussie style, would they select coastal, bush, contemporary? How did they view our interiors aesthetic? Is our style identifiable as Australian to foreigners? How unique is it?
Certain interior styles take their name from the country where they originate. Think Scandinavian, Japandi, French provincial, Hamptons. "Australian" is not (yet) referred to as a specific style that is intrinsically recognised.
So how was our style perceived by the interior designer?
The words they used were:
BRIGHT. FRESH. REFINED. AUSTRALIAN. NATURAL.
SIMPLE. SENSORY EXPERIENCE
The designers chose a clean palette of light organic colours and natural materials. In their words,
"It's simple, the use of materials is very crisp with crisp clean lines. There's no busyness and that is a lot of the beauty in the Australian design"
We can say that this interior style is a reflection of our laid back lifestyle, our affinity with nature and time spent outdoors. Current architecture and interior designs are producing spaces that imperatively maximise the amount of natural light flooding in. Who doesn't wish to live in a light and bright space?
Sensory experience through the use of texture allows for visual interest in a refined, clean environment. Texture is about creating tactile moments that draw the eye and invite touch.
Australian design is being recognised and admired for its contemporary take on our desire to live a relaxed and stylish life.
