Most of us would agree that doing the laundry is a necessary but repetitive and often mundane household chore! However, doing the laundry can be made to be more pleasant when the room is given the same design attention as the kitchen and bathroom. So when renovating or creating a new laundry, plan to design not only a functional space but also one that is innovative and aesthetically pleasing.
In this blog post, I’ll share design considerations such as layout, appliance placement, storage ideas, materials and fittings and ventilation needs.
Laundry layout
From the smallest of laundries, the European style to a large U shape with separate island, the layout will be dependant on the size of the space available.
For smaller spaces, laundries are set out in a straight line or L shaped layout which allows for maximum functionality in a compact area.
Larger spaces allow for extra storage and bench top space as well as the inclusion of other amenities such as a mud room, craft space or admin area.
Washing machine and dryer - Side by side or stacked
Placing the washing machine and dryer side by side under the bench top gives more bench space. If there isn’t enough width in the space then the dryer can be stacked above the washing machine (front loader only)
By wall mounting the dryer, there is increased bench space above the washing machine.

Storage and space saving ideas
The clever use of hidden storage solutions allow the laundry to be clutter free.
Laundry hampers
Under bench cabinets that house the laundry hamper means baskets won’t be sitting on the floor or taking up valuable bench space.
Ironing board
Drawer option - a small ironing board is folded inside a drawer.
Wall mounted ironing board
Ironing boards can be wall mounted in a recessed cavity in the wall which is pulled down as needed and folded back when not in use.
Materials and Fittings
The choice of materials and fitting plays a key role in aligning style and function. The selection of materials not only affects the visual appeal of the space but also influences its durability and practicality.
What is the best bench top for a laundry?
As in a kitchen, laundries suit a wide range of bench tops from laminates, solid surface through to engineered stone and natural stone. The material chosen will depend on the look you are wanting to achieve as well as budget considerations.
Tap selection
Selecting a tap with a high arch allows for the filling of buckets or washing larger items.
What type of sink works best?
I find that stainless steel sinks are best as they are durable, lightweight, easy to clean and affordable. Drop in sinks, either square or round, are very popular and versatile.
Is your laundry space so small that you question whether you can even fit a sink?
A question being asked lately is whether it’s ok to use the bathroom basin or kitchen sink instead of a separate laundry tub? The regulations contained in the National Construction Code provide that a residential building must be provided with clothes washing facilities, comprising at least one washtub and space in the same room for a washing machine (separate to the sink in the kitchen and bathroom basin)
So even if your laundry is confined to a laundry cabinet, at a minimum, a separate small sink should be installed.
Ventilation
Having a window in your laundry provides sunlight and fresh air into the space. A breeze from an open window reduces humidity levels and keeps the room fresh.
For windowless laundry spaces, consider installing an extractor fan to remove excess humidity.
In conclusion, although laundries are largely a utilitarian space, with careful planning and design considerations, they can be stylish rooms that are in harmony with a home’s kitchen and bathroom and contribute to the home's overall aesthetic.
