In this blog post I discuss the evolution of kitchen islands and focus on how they have become statement pieces in the overall mix of kitchen furniture components. Gone are the days when islands were viewed as simply utilitarian fixtures and not much thought was given to their design! Fast forward to the present and the island is now a sculptural feature that elevates the overall scheme of the kitchen.

The Rise of the Sculptural Kitchen Island
Kitchen designers are expressing their creative flair by incorporating materials and features into the island to create swoon-worthy designs. Kitchen islands now have immense interest and flair to be a stand out feature amongst the cabinetry and other components.
The stunning kitchen island below is clad with Super White Dolomite marble tiles and the bench top is CDK Stone and has integrated sinks. It is incredibly unique and shows the contrast in colour and materials to the rest of the kitchen.

Mixed Materials for Dimension and Depth
One of the key trends in modern kitchen design is the use of mixed materials. Combining interesting and sometimes opposing textures and finishes within the kitchen island, such as pairing sleek marble bench tops with warm wooden cabinetry, adds a sense of dimension and depth.
The relationship of one material to the other can be harmonious and complimentary or contrasting, with the resulting effect allowing the kitchen island to become a captivating focal point.
Colour
One of the biggest trends in kitchen island design has been the use of coloured and heavily veined stone. I love the added colour that is introduced when a beautiful stone is featured.

Unconventional Shapes and Designs
To add further interest to the island, we are seeing unconventional shapes and designs. Softer corners, circular islands, elliptical configurations as well as asymmetrical silhouettes. These unique designs have an immediate impact and make a bold design statement.
Kitchen island extensions
The island in this photo has a combination of materials, shapes, heights and functionality. The curved extension allows for very useful seating and means that while mum or dad are cooking in the kitchen, the kids can be having a snack or doing their homework close by.
It's this kind of creative thinking that leads to a consideration of both the aesthetics and the function of kitchen furniture.
Lighting as a Design Element
To further enhance the sculptural nature of kitchen islands, designers are incorporating creative lighting solutions. Pendant lights, strategically placed down lights and under-counter LED lighting not only illuminate the work area but they also act to spotlight and emphasise the kitchen island's unique features.
In conclusion, the kitchen island is an opportunity to introduce bold shapes, textures, and materials that seamlessly blend function with style but allow it to be a fun and extremely attractive feature.
