Interior Design Trends for 2024

With the start of a new year, chances are that designers are looking to the trends that will feature in 2024. It's always exciting thinking about and predicting what we will see in interior spaces, especially kitchens and bathrooms.

In this article, I will highlight five trends I believe will be popular in 2024.

Nature and Technology

A trend I anticipate being big in the new year (and beyond!) is the integration of nature and technology to not only make our homes healthier but also increase comfort and sustainability.

One of these features will be the installation of vibrant indoor gardens with self-watering planters where we can grow herbs and salad items. Designers will explore the marriage of biophilic elements and modern technology to create inspiring spaces that contribute to well-being in an increasingly digital age.

I’ve discussed the move towards integrating modern technology in the kitchen in my post on kitchen design trends. Read it here:

The evolution of minimalism

Minimalism is not fading away, it's evolving, and 2024 will see the era of bold minimalism – a design philosophy that embraces simplicity with a bold and striking edge.

Expect to see monochromatic palettes punctuated by statement pieces, often lighting, artwork, sculptures, rugs and even a feature wall colour and architectural plants that capture our attention. It's about creating restrained spaces with the addition of pieces that give a focal point and add a touch of interest to an otherwise bland space.

This trend isn't about restraint. Rather it's about intentional curation to make a room interesting with a select few elements.

Sustainability

Eco-conscious design will prevail in 2024. Sustainability will become synonymous with contemporary interiors.

From recycled materials to energy-efficient lighting, designers will be pushing for environmentally friendly inputs into the fabric of design. We will see homeowners asking for furniture crafted from upcycled materials, textiles sourced from eco-friendly manufacturers, sustainable paints (low VOC and non-toxic)

Choosing sustainable options is a commitment to both style and stewardship. Thankfully, we are seeing a growing awareness of our impact on the planet and sustainability is no longer just a trend, it's part of our design consciousness.

Flexible furniture and multi purpose living

As our living spaces continue to accommodate diverse family needs, multi functionality becomes a design consideration in 2024. We are accomodating growing families as well as multi generations due to the increased scarcity and cost of available homes.

Furniture that has various purposes, convertible spaces that seamlessly shift from work to leisure and storage solutions that are as aesthetic and practical – these are the essentials of a home designed for flexible living.

It will be about creating environments that evolve with the changes in our daily lives, fostering a sense of adaptability and versatility in every nook and cranny. It’s the era of design that moves with you and your family.

Relaxed luxury

In 2023 we saw natural stone, beautiful lighting, art and the stunning use of colour. In 2024, this practice of bringing luxurious hotel aesthetics into our homes will gain further momentum. This interiors style is known as "relaxed luxury."

This style creates an inviting and warm as well as a visually eye catching space by incorporating luxurious, good quality materials and a range of textures.

Think plush, comfortable sofas, dainty side tables, ambient lighting, greenery and art. The emphasis is on cultivating an environment that reflects the tranquility and indulgence we associate with high-end hospitality.

What do you think will be trending in 2024? Let me know!

Cheers,

Grace
