Essential Bathroom Measurements

Bathrooms are one of the most used spaces in a home so when it comes to designing your dream bathroom, creating the perfect layout ensures your bathroom is functional and stylish.


Knowing the essential bathroom measurements is key to planning the perfect layout. Some of these measurements are guided by standards and building codes whilst others are industry best practice.


Whether your project is a cosmetic update or a complete renovation understanding the basic measurements will help to ensure your bathroom is practical, safe and accessible.

In this article I’ll share the common measurements you need to know when planning your new bathroom.

FLOOR PLAN


Minimum floor size

For a basic bathroom that includes a toilet, sink and shower, the minimum space is around 2.76sqm or 2300mm by 1200mm.

This allows for door width of 820mm and vanity depth of 300mm.


Door width and swing clearance

Minimum 820mm opening width for a single hinged door, cavity or slider door and 900mm for a wheelchair-accessible door.

Allow at least 1200 mm clear space in front of the door swing for accessibility.


SHOWER


Shower space

A minimum clear floor space of 900mm x 900mm for a standard shower area.


Shower entrance

Keep the shower entrance as wide as possible, minimum is 650mm wide and ideally around 700mm.


Shower step

Avoid steps within the shower area for better accessibility, but if necessary, limit the height to 10 mm.


Shower niche

Recommended size is minimum 300mm height, 450mm width and depth of 90mm.

Height from finished floor to the bottom of the niche set at 900mm - 1000mm.


Shower fixtures

Shower taps or mixers minimum height off the floor is 900mm.


BATH


Bath Length

A standard bathtub in Australia is around 1600 mm in length and 700-750 mm in width.


Bath front clearance

Leave at least 700 mm of clear space in front of a bathtub for comfortable use.


Bath to wall clearance

For a freestanding bath, a space of 100mm between the bath and the wall allows enough access space for cleaning. If space allows, 150 - 200mm is recommended.


Bath tap and spout

For wall set fixtures, set at a minimum of 100mm above the bath.

For floor standing bath fillers, ensure the spout is 80mm from the edge of the rim.


TOILET


Side space

Allow a minimum of 200mm either side of the toilet or minimum of 750mm in total.

Recommended is 900mm total width.


Front clearance

Minimum clearance in front of the toilet of 500mm is recommended.


VANITY


Vanity dimensions

Standard height 860mm - 900mm.

Depth 360mm - 450mm.


Front clearance

Minimum 500mm


Top mount basin

The top of the basin rim at a height of 850mm - 900 mm from the finished floor level.


Basin tap and spout height

Set at a height of 100mm - 150mm above the basin.


TOWEL HOLDERS


Towel rail

Minimum 900mm from finished floor


Towel hooks

Placement to suit users and ranges from 1500 -1800mm from finished floor.
