With our gorgeous Aussie summers, there is something very special about spending time with family and friends cooking, eating and entertaining outdoors.
An alfresco kitchens is the perfect place (and excuse) to spend more time enjoying our backyards especially during those warmer days. They are functional, appealing and can also add significant value to your home.
Here are ten key considerations when designing the perfect outdoor kitchen.
Firstly, is your alfresco kitchen area covered or uncovered?
Good weather protection gives you the ability to enjoy the space more often and under different conditions. Consider installing a pergola, awning or a roof to shield the kitchen from the sun, rain and wind.
Are your appliances suitable for the outdoors?
Select outdoor-rated appliances that can handle being exposed to the weather.
These typically include a barbecue, sink, fridge and possibly a wine cooler. Choose appliances made with more durable finishes.
Positioning the gas, electrical and water outlets
Planning for supply outlets in an alfresco kitchen means ensuring proper access to gas, water, and electricity. As well as keeping safety and durability in mind. Outdoor kitchens require extra care due to exposure to the elements, so utility connections must be designed with protective measures.
Materials selections
This will be one of the most important selections you will make! Choosing the right, weather-proof materials for cabinetry, bench top and hardware will ensure your alfresco kitchen withstands the elements and maintains it aesthetic appeal.
Cabinet doors
A great option for cabinet doors is compact laminate. This material is non porous, very durable and is low maintenance. The compact laminate is set within an aluminium frame to create doors that are stylish and practical.
Bench top
There is a wide range of materials for bench tops for an alfresco kitchen. From the cost effective options of tiles, timber and engineered stones through to more expensive options such as natural stone and stainless steel. Selecting the one that works for you depends on budget and the design style you are creating.
The following are just some of the options available:
Porcelain - is engineered to be highly nonporous and is resistant to bacteria, mould and mildew making it safe and clean for use in an outdoor kitchen.
Solid Surface - is an acrylic material that is non porous, heat resistant, repairable and is UV stable.
Dekton - is an ultra compact porcelain surface. Manufactured under extreme heat and pressure, it is resistant to high temperatures, stains and impact. It can withstand external climatic factors making it one of the best materials for outdoor kitchens.
Concrete - a cost effective option that is strong and does last a long time however it does need to be sealed to avoid staining. It is heat resistant and able to withstand outdoor conditions.
Timber - for a warm and natural look, timber is a great choice. A hardwood timber will ensure longevity and resistance to the elements however timber does need regular maintenance. Sealing every six months will keep it looking like new and in optimal condition.
Lighting
Install adequate lighting for both functionality and ambiance. Include task lighting at the preparation and bbq areas and ambient lighting for dining and entertaining.
Layout and Flow
Plan the layout to facilitate easy movement between cooking, preparation, and serving areas. Also consider the workflow from the indoor kitchen to the outdoor kitchen for convenience and proximity.
Ventilation
Ensure adequate ventilation to maintain air quality. If your alfresco area is more enclosed then installing a range hood will assist with reducing smoke and cooking odours. For a more open outdoor kitchen, proper positioning of the barbecue/stove will allow for effective ventilation.
Storage
Allowing sufficient storage for utensils, cookware and cleaning items is essential. Serving and dining ware can also be stored in weather sealed cabinetry.
Sink and Tap
If space permits, installing a small sink and tap allows for ease of cleaning and washing. Selecting good quality materials such as corrosion-resistant 316 stainless steel will ensure durability and longevity of these fittings.
Seating and Dining:
Integrate a seating and dining area into the outdoor kitchen to accommodate family and friends. Consider options like built-in seating or bench seating around a dining table to maximise comfort and enhance the outdoor dining experience.
Another option is a bar table and stools for that vacation vibe.
