Creating a cosy reading nook

If you are an avid reader, enjoy chilling with your playlist or just love a comfortable space to daydream then creating a relaxing nook is a luxury worth creating! A cleverly designed nook is both appealing and functional. I'm all for any opportunity to ditch the phone, pick up my book and sit back with a nice cuppa. Follow these tips to create your own cosy reading nook.

Tips for how to create a cosy nook

1. Locate the perfect spot

Look around your home and find a place that is quiet, gets good natural light and preferably has a nice outlook. Although these elements aren’t always possible they will ensure your reading nook is inviting, calming and you will be heading there as often as you can!

Bay window

If you are fortunate to have a bay window in your house then this is one of the most ideal options for creating a cosy reading nook. Built in seating that perfectly fits the space is very luxurious. However where there is no seating investing in a cabinet maker to custom build bay seating will create a refined look. A more modest option is to add an ottoman or lounge chair that closely fits into the space.

Unused corner

Unused corners would have to be one of the easiest spots to convert into a cosy reading nook. Add your favourite armchair, place a lamp on a side table and hang artwork on the adjacent wall. Cushions, a lambswool rug and an ottoman increase the comfort factor. Strong natural light is best and the addition of a plant adds a touch of nature.

Under the staircase

A crevice under the stairs can be converted into a cosy reading nook. Bench seating and a bench cushion for sitting on together with cushions creates a lovely spot to relax. The addition of under seat storage ensures there's a place to store books.

Attic (or basement) space

These spaces are ideal for converting into recreation rooms, home offices or cosy reading nooks. Similar to a bay window with inbuilt seating for that custom look or using a lounge chair and footstool, this can be transformed into the perfect space for reading or relaxing.

Balcony or front porch

Near nature and outside is a wonderful spot especially on those warm summery days. When it's cooler, grab a fluffy throw blanket and enjoy the fresh air.

2. Comfort is key

For maximum relaxation when spending time in your reading nook it's essential to start with a soft, or firm, base cushion, depending on your preference. Don't forget to add in some cushions in your favourite colours and patterns for a stylish touch. During the cooler months, a warm throw or blanket will keep you extra cosy.

3. Lighting

Natural light is always best but if the space isn't bright enough then you will need to add a light source. Task lighting can be on the wall in the form of a sconce, an overhead light in the form of a floor lamp or a table lamp set on a side table.

3. Scent

Do you have a favourite scented candle? Lighting one while relaxing in your reading nook is sure to add to the ambience. Flowers are also a great option.

4. Reading nooks for small spaces

When your home just doesn’t have the space for a dedicated nook then we can think about the following alternatives:

  • Daybed

  • Armchair

  • Ottoman with storage

  • Beanbag

  • Undercover alfresco

5. Reading nook in a small bedroom

When the only space available for a reading nook is in the bedroom then it’s time to think creatively. Setting aside a small space for a comfortable lounge chair is a good starting point. Place the chair in a corner or near a window, add a small side table and lamp. An ottoman to put your feet up and a cushion for your back transforms this spot into a quiet and inviting retreat. At other times it may be seating that's tucked away until needed.

CONCLUSION:

I hope these tips entice you to create your own special space for reading or relaxing! Whether you have a dedicated space or perhaps just a small or temporary spot the benefits from having a comfortable reading nook are enormous.
