2022’s Biggest Design Trends - Part I

The top design trends for 2022 have been forecast and the results are in. Expect to see our interiors connecting to nature via indoor plants and a palette reflecting the natural environment. We'll continue decorating with organic, curvy furniture and accessories. Colour will begin to feature in the all white schemes that have been popular for the last few years.

Return to normality

After these last two tumultuous years most of us are craving a return to a sense of normality. For homeowners this means creating spaces that are comforting, calming and convey a sense of security. The beginning of a new year heralds renewal and optimism and our interiors will incorporate design features that reflect these aspirations.

Indoor nature

Bringing the natural world indoors to create a link between our homes and the environment can have an extremely beneficial impact on our health (physically and psychologically). One of the biggest uptakes during the pandemic was of course, gardening. Everybody took an interest in maintaining indoor plants! As we ease out of the pandemic, we are seeking to feel connected to nature to regain a sense of calm and slow down our busy lives. Living more mindfully has an amazing effect on our well being.

Forest in your home

Large trees are taking centre stage and are becoming increasingly popular. Often large trees were transplanted into the garden creating a focal feature but now they're being placed inside the home. Planted in a beautiful vintage urn or pot, they are impactful and make a great natural feature.

Nature Inspired Palettes

Another way to infuse your home with nature is by applying a palette based on nature itself. Think creams, taupes, greys and surprisingly, browns. Looking at Dulux’s colour inspirations for 2022, the aptly titled “Restore” range reveals a selection of earthy tones that come straight from nature.

Nature is the great healer and, in fact, research shows that colour schemes like those found in the outdoor environment reduce stress and can increase productivity and creativity. The calming effect makes us happier and more focussed.

Colour association

Colours associated with places that give us comfort will feature more in our homes. So whether you are inspired by the countryside, rainforest, coast or your own garden reflecting these in your home will no doubt have a mood-lifting effect. Expect to see a range of earthy greens such as olive and moss, calming greys, creamy whites, all complementing natural wood tones, stone, bamboo, rattan and flora.

Pop of Colour

In amongst all the natural tones we will see injections of luminous hues inspired by the sun and sky. Expect to see artwork, textiles and lighting in sky blue and golden yellows. These lustrous mid tones bring a sense of positivity and optimism and imbue the space with some energy and vibrancy.

Curves, curves, curves

This design style shows no signs of slowing down. We have seen it incorporated everywhere from lounges, armchairs, tables, kitchen bench tops to vases, mirrors and lighting. The soft round edges are nurturing and comforting. The curves work to soften anything angular and create a relaxed and comfortable feel within the space.
